ALEX MARQUEZ BACKS MOTOGP RIDERS’ UNION, THOUGH HE EXPECTS LITTLE PERSONAL BENEFIT
29 Oct 2026·

Alex Marquez says recent events have strengthened the case for a MotoGP riders’ union, as competitors seek a greater voice in decisions affecting their safety and working conditions. The debate has gathered momentum ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled shortly after the Malaysian round, amid concerns about holding the event at Lusail during the conflict in the Middle East.
At a media appearance in Malaysia, the Gresini rider described a growing sense of unity among the field. “We are pulling together more than in the past,” he said. “Many of the riders think the same way about this issue. Maybe not everyone, but most of them.” Marquez added that individual riders currently have little influence over major decisions. Promoters have agreements with teams, which can then put pressure on riders, leaving the competitors with limited power to object.
The union effort is not new: Marquez said riders had tried to organise several years ago, but the atmosphere among them was then “strange.” Recent developments, he believes, have changed attitudes. “I think everyone in the field has realised that we need the union,” he said.
Marquez, who is 30, sees the project as a long-term undertaking rather than something likely to benefit him personally. “I probably won’t benefit much from it any more,” he said, adding that he would be pleased if the riders could establish a union for the younger competitors joining the championship.
For now, the Qatar event remains on the calendar. Marquez said there had been no change to its status: “At the moment, the event is confirmed.” The first scheduled activities at Lusail are due just four days after the chequered flag in Sepang.
On track, Marquez arrives with strong recent form at the Malaysian circuit. He won there last autumn and set the fastest time at the 2026 winter test, with a lap of 1:56.4. His pace could make him a contender in Sepang and potentially affect the title fight involving his brother, championship leader Marc Marquez.
