MARQUEZ SKIPS MOTEGI KART EVENT TO FOCUS ON TITLE FIGHT
5 Oct 2026·

Marc Marquez skipped MotoGP’s kart race at Motegi, choosing instead to focus on a demanding Japanese Grand Prix weekend and his bid for the 2026 title. The decision drew attention after a stand-in appeared in his place, but Marquez said his priorities were clear: “We’re fighting for the championship, not for a bit of fun and go-karts doing laps.”
He explained that the substitution began as a joke during warm-up. “I said I needed ice, and one of the team members came out and said it’d be cool if a stunt double turned up. It was a bit of a ‘hold my drink’ moment, and they caught on,” he said. Marquez added that he had been reprimanded, but insisted: “Right now we have to be selfish and perform at our best when it counts, which is in the races.”
The kart event was part of MotoGP’s effort to give fans more entertainment around race weekends, following other promotional activities such as the Tuk Tuk race in Thailand. Marquez has also missed a London fan event this season, saying that spending six hours at an appearance could affect a rider’s physical condition. He said he had instead met the media at the circuit.
There were practical reasons for conserving energy at Motegi. The circuit’s heavy braking demands make it physically taxing, while Marquez’s right arm was reported to be operating at about half its full capacity after the shoulder injury he suffered in Indonesia the previous year. The warm-up was also extended from 10 to 20 minutes so riders could test the hard tyre, which they had not used during the weekend after blistering problems with other compounds in the sprint.
The timing made the weekend especially important. After missing a chance in Austria, Marquez and Ducati needed a strong result in Japan before heading to Mandalika, where he has never finished a grand prix and where he was badly injured in 2025. His double victory at Motegi was his fifth of the season and moved him to within two points of championship leader Jorge Martin.
Indonesia presents a different challenge. Ducati struggled there last year with Michelin’s heat-resistant rear tyre, although Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer won. Marquez has shown he can be competitive on the stiffer tyre, while Martin has been building form on the Aprilia. A strong result for Martin and a difficult weekend for Marquez could shift the title contest.
Marquez has fought back from 102 points behind to become one of the two leading contenders, while adapting his riding to manage injury. With the championship close and his physical condition still a concern, the Motegi kart appearance was a lower priority than preparing to race. His choice also highlights the tension between MotoGP’s push for fan engagement and the demands already placed on riders by a packed weekend schedule.
