MARTINEZ SPOTS A KEY TRAIT MARQUEZ AND MARTIN SHARE

14 Oct 2026·

Juan Martinez, Nicky Hayden’s former crew chief, sees a shared quality behind the fierce 2026 MotoGP title fight between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin: both know their strengths and how to use them.

The Spaniards are separated by just two points, with Martin leading the championship and Marquez second. Their rivalry has roots in Ducati’s decision to sign Marquez for 2025, despite Martin having won the previous year’s world title. Both are also known for aggressive riding, with Martin’s extreme body positioning often compared with the acrobatics that have helped Marquez win seven world championships.

The latest round at Mandalika underlined how narrow the margins remain. Marquez won Saturday’s Sprint, but Aprilia proved dominant in the Grand Prix, taking the top four places. Martin finished third and recovered ground in the standings. The result also highlighted the strength of Aprilia’s 2026 bike when a circuit suits its characteristics.

Martinez, speaking on DAZN Spain alongside Dani Pedrosa, described Aprilia as “a very well-balanced motorbike”. He said Ducati might have “a slight edge” when conditions are favourable to everyone, but that advantage can quickly disappear outside Ducati’s ideal operating window. In those circumstances, he added, “the Aprilia remains a superb motorbike”.

For Martinez, the championship will turn on how the leading riders respond when things do not go their way. He said Marquez and Martin are both “well aware of their strengths” and know how to make the most of them, tuning out distractions to get the best from themselves.

That ability to manage difficult moments, avoid major errors and keep extracting results could prove decisive as the season progresses. Martinez said the title battle is testing both riders in precisely that way, and that if the contest continues on its current course, it could remain unresolved until Valencia.
