MOTOGP RIDERS MOURN PHILLIP ISLAND’S EXIT FROM THE CALENDAR
22 Oct 2026·

MotoGP riders have expressed disappointment that this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix will be the championship’s last at Phillip Island. The 4.4km circuit is set to be replaced on the calendar from 2027 by a revamped Adelaide street circuit. Many riders regard Phillip Island as one of their favourite venues, with some saying its departure will be “so sad.”
VR46 Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio was especially emotional ahead of the race, saying: “I cry every day.” Phillip Island holds particular significance for him: he claimed his maiden MotoGP podium there in 2023, a result that helped save his career.
“It’s the most beautiful track in the world, and the fact that they took it away was heartbreaking,” Di Giannantonio said. While he hopes the move will help the sport grow, he added: “For me, this was the track they shouldn’t have touched.” He described the circuit as MotoGP’s “iconic track” and said he wanted to enjoy “every inch” of it during the final visit.
The fast, flowing layout and striking setting have made Phillip Island a favourite among riders. Di Giannantonio also noted that Sunday’s weather could cause problems and force changes to the schedule, warning: “Here at Phillip Island, you never know, and the weather is crazy.”
