ROSSI’S EARLY 125CC SHOWMANSHIP HELPED PUSH MARTÍNEZ TOWARD RETIREMENT

24 Oct 2026·

Jorge Aspar Martinez says Valentino Rossi’s early-career antics helped convince him to retire from racing, as the Spaniard reflected on their time in the Grand Prix paddock.

Speaking on the Fast & Curious podcast, Martinez recalled that Rossi’s father, Graziano, approached him in late 1994 about placing his son with Martinez’s team. At the time, Martinez was riding for a Yamaha-backed Spanish project and declined, explaining: “I’m sure your son is very good, but I’m part of a Spanish project, not an international one.”

The two later raced against each other in the European Championship at Misano in 1995. Rossi claimed his first Grand Prix victory the following year, beating Martinez at Brno. Martinez remembered the young Italian as “a very aggressive rider” and “a different sort of rider”.

It was not only Rossi’s speed that made an impression. Martinez said the newcomer’s showmanship stood apart from the culture he had known in his own era. “That was actually one of the reasons that led me to retire,” he said, recalling Rossi dyeing his hair, dressing as Superman and arriving on the grid with an inflatable doll. “Things like that, obviously, were a world away from my own era.”

Martinez, a four-time world champion who now runs the Aspar Moto2 and Moto3 teams, acknowledged Rossi’s ability on track as well as his knack for connecting with fans and the media. He has described the nine-time world champion as a more complete rider, while also arguing that Marc Marquez is “infinitely faster” than Rossi.

Rossi retired from motorcycle racing in 2021. His blend of performance and personality made him a distinctive presence in the paddock, and Martinez’s recollection offers a glimpse of how dramatically the Italian’s arrival changed the sport’s atmosphere.
