YAMAHA’S FUTURE LINE-UP LEADS THE FACTORY STANDINGS AS MERGALLI EYES THE 2027 NUMBER ONE PLATE

Yamaha heads into the second half of the MotoGP season at Silverstone with its current factory fortunes still under pressure, but with its future rider plans looking increasingly significant for what comes next. Fabio Quartararo sits 14th in the championship as the British round approaches, yet Yamaha’s wider ecosystem is producing a very different picture: Jorge Martin leads the standings for the factory and Trackhouse Aprilia teams, while Ai Ogura is second for his squad. That means Yamaha, despite being fifth and last in the constructors’ battle, could still be in position to run the coveted number one plate at the start of the 2027 850cc/Pirelli era.

Monster Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli said Yamaha did not have to “convince them” when it came to signing Martin and Ogura, framing the decision as a straightforward outcome of the work already underway. He added that the team is “extremely satisfied” with what has been achieved so far and that Yamaha is “really excited” for a new season that will bring “a lot of new things,” not only in terms of the rider line-up. Meregalli also stressed that the focus remains on the current campaign, noting that there are “a lot of races in 2026 before the end.”

When asked whether Yamaha is considering bringing in a reigning MotoGP champion for next season, Meregalli responded affirmatively: “Yeah, for sure, we are considering this possibility.” However, he also made clear his view on where the number one should come from. For a manufacturer and team, he said, “it’s better to get the number one from inside, not coming from outside.”

Meregalli’s comments came alongside assurances that Yamaha’s development efforts are not finished. He said Yamaha will “keep working until the end of the season,” and that “this [latest aero] will not be the last update,” reinforcing the idea that the team sees further performance gains ahead.

The stakes are heightened by Martin’s position at the top of the standings. If he maintains his lead, it would be the second time Martin has taken the number one plate to another manufacturer after winning the 2024 MotoGP crown with Aprilia’s Pramac Ducati package. Quartararo is confirmed to be moving to Honda, while Alex Rins—along with Pramac’s Jack Miller—has been linked with potential WorldSBK opportunities.

With those changes in mind, Meregalli was asked whether keeping the current Yamaha line-up motivated would be difficult given the broader rider turnover and the V4’s recent results. He insisted professionalism would be the guiding factor, saying: “I think they are professional riders, as we are a professional team.” His message was simple: “The aim is just to try to improve the performance and to get the best results as possible.”

In the championship picture heading into Silverstone, Martin holds a 14-point advantage over Ogura. Ducati’s reigning champion Marc Marquez is a further 18 points back, while Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi and VR46’s Fabio di Giannantonio are both within 24 points of the lead, keeping the fight wide open as the season moves into its final stretch.
