ALONSO ACCEPTS EITHER HONDA OR LCR FOR HIS 2027 MOTOGP DEBUT

25 Sept 2026·

David Alonso says he is prepared to begin his MotoGP career with either Honda’s factory team or LCR in 2027, while the manufacturer weighs up who should partner Fabio Quartararo.

Honda has signed the Colombian to a multi-year factory contract for his move to MotoGP, and early reports suggested he would join the works line-up as a rookie. But LCR rider Diogo Moreira has strengthened his case for promotion with a strong first season in the premier class. The Brazilian arrived as reigning Moto2 champion and, with 65 points, is Honda’s second-highest scorer in 2026, behind Luca Marini’s 98.

Quartararo, the 2021 world champion, is due to join Honda from Yamaha on a two-year deal. Moreira is now reportedly in contention to become his teammate, leaving Alonso’s destination undecided.

Alonso has had a mixed Moto2 campaign. He won the Dutch Grand Prix and has collected four podiums, but sits fourth in the standings, 90.5 points behind leader Manuel Gonzalez. Moreira’s results have reportedly prompted Honda to reconsider its original plan for Alonso, though the team has yet to confirm its 2027 line-up.

Speaking to Moto.it, Alonso said Honda itself was a dream opportunity. “It’s a dream to work for Honda,” he said, adding that he had been encouraged by the trust shown during discussions. Asked what would determine whether he rides for the factory team or LCR, he replied: “From them. I’m waiting, and both options are fine with me. We’ll see what happens.”

The uncertainty is complicated by Alonso’s reported contractual promise of a factory Honda seat. Promoting Moreira could therefore require Honda to alter that arrangement or find another way to satisfy Alonso. A move to LCR would not trouble the rookie, but it could postpone his chance to join the works team: Quartararo’s contract runs for two years, and a strong 2027 campaign from Moreira could make Honda reluctant to change its line-up again for 2028.
