BEZZECCHI BRACES FOR UNKNOWN GRIP ON MOTEGI’S NEW ASPHALT

1 Oct 2026·

Marco Bezzecchi arrives at Motegi as MotoGP’s third-placed rider after a dramatic change in fortunes. A strong start to the 2026 season made the Aprilia rider an early title favourite, but crashes and injury, alongside the return of his rivals, have left him 42 points behind his former position at the top. Marc Marquez is 30 points ahead, while Pedro Acosta has also closed to within 30 points after three consecutive Grand Prix podiums, including victory at Spielberg.

Bezzecchi is not dwelling on the standings. “For me, it’s a race weekend like any other,” he said before practice, adding that he loves both Japan and the circuit. “In the end, it’s all about concentrating on myself.” He said a strong start would be important, particularly on Friday, before the team works to improve through the event. The identity of the bikes around him, he added, makes no difference.

One major unknown is Motegi’s newly resurfaced track. Bezzecchi has inspected the asphalt and said it looks “fantastic”, but he does not yet know how it will work with the tyres. “It’s also a leap into the unknown,” he said, while making clear he remains optimistic.

The Aprilia’s front-end feel could be an asset at a circuit known for three heavy braking zones. Bezzecchi said he is pleased with the bike’s front-wheel control and its feel under braking and on corner entry. Motegi also has faster sections, but its demanding stops often reward riders who can brake effectively.

Last year, Bezzecchi struggled to make full use of the RS-GP. He was taken out by his teammate at the first corner of the sprint, then rode through the pain to finish fourth in the longer race. By then, Ducati’s factory team had won and the title fight had moved beyond his reach. This time, the championship picture is different, but Bezzecchi’s focus remains on getting the weekend right rather than calculating what he needs in the standings.
