BEZZECCHI EMERGES AS A LATE-SEASON TITLE THREAT TO MARQUEZ
18 Oct 2026·

Marco Bezzecchi’s Indonesian Grand Prix victory has put him firmly back in the MotoGP title conversation, with five rounds remaining in the 2026 season. He is third in the standings, 46 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin and just two points behind Marc Marquez, who occupies second. Martin remains Marquez’s closest rival on the table, but Bezzecchi’s recent form makes him a serious threat in the closing stretch.
The case for Bezzecchi rests partly on his finish to last season. After Marquez was injured at Mandalika and missed the rest of 2025, Bezzecchi won the Australian Sprint, then took Grand Prix victories in Portugal and Valencia. His only difficult weekend among those final four rounds came in Malaysia. Those three circuits—Phillip Island, Portimao and Valencia—are still to come this year, offering the Aprilia rider a chance to repeat some of that late-season success.
Marquez has shown he can win on a wide range of tracks, but Bezzecchi’s ability to build momentum late in a campaign could make him an unpredictable challenger. Martin has the advantage of leading the championship; Bezzecchi, by contrast, is chasing and has already demonstrated that he can deliver strong results on the current-generation bikes.
The points gap means Bezzecchi cannot afford many missed opportunities, and his Indonesian win alone does not erase the deficit. But with several of the tracks where he excelled last year still ahead, ruling him out would be premature. Marquez may need to keep an eye not only on Martin at the front, but also on Bezzecchi closing from behind.
