CAL CRUTCHLOW RETURNS TO BRITISH MOTOGP AT SILVERSTONE AFTER ZARCO INJURY CALL-UP

Cal Crutchlow is relishing a surprise return to MotoGP action in his home British Grand Prix at Silverstone after being called up by his former LCR Honda team. The 40-year-old, who retired at the end of 2020, last raced at Silverstone in 2021 as a stand-in for the factory Yamaha team. His most recent Yamaha appearance before this latest opportunity came at the 2023 Japanese round.

For 2026, Crutchlow’s comeback has come through an injury replacement: he was drafted in to replace Johann Zarco from Mugello. With Zarco not expected to be fit until September, Crutchlow now gets the chance to race at the same circuit where he previously delighted British fans with a home runner-up finish for LCR in 2016.

While the headline for the weekend is the emotional pull of racing in front of his own crowd, Crutchlow’s immediate focus is practical. He said, “Racing at Silverstone is always something special,” adding that “every home Grand Prix means a little bit more because you know there are so many fans, and it's a great feeling to race in front of them.” He also pointed to the atmosphere as a source of extra drive: “The atmosphere is incredible, and that extra support gives you additional motivation.” Crutchlow described Silverstone as “one of the most enjoyable and technical tracks on the calendar,” and said he has “some really nice memories there over the years.”

On expectations, the realistic target is to score points. Since his return, Crutchlow’s best result has been 16th, and with the UK’s only rider on the premier-class grid, he can expect a strong home following regardless of where he finishes.

Silverstone CEO Stuart Pringle also welcomed Crutchlow’s presence, noting that the British Grand Prix has consistently delivered high drama, with “11 different [grand prix] winners in as many years,” and that the weekend “promises to be no different.” Pringle said Crutchlow’s return will add to the event’s appeal, and highlighted additional local interest beyond MotoGP: former Tech3 team-mate Bradley Smith will make a wildcard entry in the Bagger World Cup, with Pringle describing the Harley-Davidson event at Silverstone as being staged there “for the very first time.”
