HONDA HINTS AT MOTEGI TRIBUTE ANNOUNCEMENT

24 Sept 2026·

Honda has hinted at a “full circle moment” ahead of the Japanese MotoGP round, but has yet to explain what it plans to announce. The reveal is scheduled for 1 October, the day before practice begins at Mobility Resort Motegi, and forms part of the manufacturer’s video series, The Dream. The Challenge.

Launched in June, the series marks 60 years since Honda first entered the premier class of grand prix racing, then known as the 500cc category. The teaser offers few details, though its image shows a silhouette identified as Honda’s 2026 RC213V. That makes a preview of the 850cc regulations due in 2027 seem unlikely.

A special design for Takaaki Nakagami’s Motegi wildcard entry is a more plausible explanation. Honda has retained the wildcard despite Joan Mir withdrawing from the Japanese and Indonesian rounds for health reasons. Somkiat Chantra has been brought in to replace Mir in Japan, while Nakagami remains set to make his wildcard appearance.

The timing gives the entry added significance: MotoGP will prohibit wildcard appearances from next season, making Nakagami’s ride the final wildcard opportunity in the championship. A commemorative livery would also fit the anniversary theme and could mark the RC213V’s last home race. The bike has won six world titles, according to the report.

A major technical development announcement appears less likely. With only a few races left in the current 1,000cc and Michelin era, Honda has little reason to pursue experimental parts whose value may not carry over to the next rules cycle. The manufacturer is also unlikely to win any of this season’s three titles and can no longer take the manufacturers’ championship.

Honda has not confirmed the nature of the announcement, so the expected tribute livery remains speculation until the teaser is followed up on 1 October.
