PEDRO ACOSTA WINS AUSTRIAN GP FOR MAIDEN MOTOGP VICTORY, HOLDING OFF JORGE MARTIN

Jorge Martin led the MotoGP field from pole at the Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring, aiming to complete “the double” after winning the sprint the day before. The sprint victory came with a twist: Pedro Acosta crashed, which helped Martin, but Martin also earned the result with a strong ride after losing contact early on in a Turn 2 incident involving Marc Marquez. Martin later said he was “almost down,” underlining how close the drama was in the opening lap.

Acosta’s comeback was the main storyline heading into Sunday. After building a 2.5-second advantage late in the sprint, he was furious when it disappeared in the crash. He explained that the crash happened because he looked at his dashboard to check whether he had enough fuel for the 14-lap sprint, then “simply missed his braking marker.” Despite the setback, he remained the benchmark of the weekend and started Sunday from third, giving him a real chance at his first Grand Prix win in MotoGP.

On the front row, Marquez lined up between Martin and Acosta. After the sprint, he looked subdued and admitted he didn’t have the pace of the leading duo. He also said it would have been “not clever” to defend when the Aprilia rider went past and took second, meaning he wanted to manage the situation rather than take further risks.

The sprint crash reshuffled the points picture. Marco Bezzecchi moved up from fourth to third directly as a result of Acosta’s fall, providing an important boost to his title hopes, even if they remain slim: Bezzecchi is now 38 points behind Martin.

Tire grip was a recurring theme at the Red Bull Ring. Michelin brought a harder-constructed option for the weekend. Alex Marquez described the sprint experience as “zero fun,” saying he struggled to find traction. Fabio Di Gi Giannantonio was even more baffled, calling his problems “completely unusual,” given he used the same tire in Goiania and had stood on the podium in both races.

On Sunday, the race delivered the breakthrough Acosta had been searching for. Starting from fourth, the KTM rider dropped to fifth early on, but quickly fought his way forward. On lap nine of 28, he took the lead from Martin. From there he held off the Aprilia challenge and claimed his first MotoGP Grand Prix win, ending a KTM drought that had lasted since 2022. The triumph came after another setback: Acosta had crashed out of the lead in the sprint on Saturday and then crashed again on Sunday morning.

Martin, who led the opening eight laps, ultimately finished 1.017s behind Acosta. He said: “I think today Pedro was fighting for something more than just a victory after such a long [wait].” He also pinpointed where Acosta found the edge: “In the third corner he was braking like an animal! He was making a big step there. Also corner five.”

Acosta made the pressure feel very personal in his own account. After the sprint mistake and the warm-up crash, he admitted: “The f**k-up yesterday was huge. And also today [in warm-up], because I destroyed my race bike.” He added: “Honestly, I was scared, because I really didn’t want to make another mistake at KTM’s place. But, well, we managed it.”

After the win, Acosta thanked the people who helped him recover from the morning crash. He said Tech3 helped repair his bike and that without them they would not have had two race bikes ready for the event. He also reflected on the emotional weight of winning at KTM’s home track.

In the paddock, Brad Binder sent a message to his teammate, praising how Acosta has been “carrying” KTM of late. Speaking to TNT Sports after the race, Binder said: “Pedro really, really deserves it… what he’s been doing lately is unreal. He really has been carrying the team and making things look a hell of a lot better than they sometimes are!” Binder noted Acosta has scored nine of KTM’s 10 podiums across the two formats, and he finished sixth himself on Sunday.

Dani Pedrosa echoed that view from the Honda garage, saying Acosta’s performance was “incredible work from him,” and that despite the two crashes he stayed calm at the start and found his way after a few laps.
