MOTOGP RIDERS COULD BOYCOTT KTM IF MAVERICK VINALES IS AXED MID-SEASON

Maverick Viñales’ future at KTM and Tech3 is under intense scrutiny, with fresh reports suggesting the team could look to move him on mid-season. The concern, however, is that any early termination—before the end of the campaign—would be a major reputational blow for KTM and Tech3 in the eyes of fellow riders.

Viñales has been unavailable for Tech3 for much of the season due to a series of injury-related problems, and KTM officials are said to be frustrated with how the situation has unfolded. At the same time, riders have reportedly grown critical of KTM’s handling of Viñales, arguing that the Spaniard has not been shown the empathy they believe a rider dealing with ongoing medical issues deserves. That backdrop is central to why a mid-season change is viewed as risky: cutting Viñales early could fuel a narrative that KTM has neglected him during a period of need.

One reported pathway for KTM is to replace Viñales with Pol Espargaró, with the switch linked to the British Grand Prix. The timing is complicated by the fact that Viñales’ medical test results have not yet been returned. According to the report, Viñales has chosen to take additional time to recover from his current injuries.

The “best-case” scenario for KTM and Tech3, as described, would be for Viñales to remain out for the rest of the season due to injury. That would allow the teams to avoid having to make a contract decision while the season is still ongoing. Another option discussed is that Viñales’ shoulder surgery—mentioned as part of his situation—could enable KTM and Tech3 to plan behind the scenes without formally releasing him before the season ends.

Tech3, meanwhile, are described as having already known they were unlikely to keep Viñales going into 2027, which is why letting his contract run out quietly is presented as the least disruptive outcome. While some observers may argue that KTM has grounds to move on from Viñales, the report stresses that the teams must weigh the optics carefully—particularly because they have not yet finalised their rider pairing for 2027.

The overall warning is that if KTM and Tech3 act in a way that other riders perceive as harsh or insensitive, it could trigger broader backlash, including the possibility that riders begin boycotting KTM.
