TECH3 FACES A MID-SEASON DECISION ON SENNA AGIUS IF MAVERICK VINALES IS AXED

Tech3’s plans for the remainder of the 2026 MotoGP season are being thrown into uncertainty by Maverick Viñales’ situation. According to reports, Viñales’ immediate future with the team is in doubt as he continues to deal with injury issues and growing tension with management. Viñales has been described as adamant that he intends to stay with the team through the end of the season, despite speculation that KTM may be looking at ways to end the partnership immediately. The team’s lack of an immediate public response has only added to the sense that his position is not secure.

With that backdrop, attention has turned to Tech3’s potential options at the British Grand Prix. Test rider Pol Espargaro is expected to be considered as a replacement, either as a temporary injury cover or potentially as a longer-term solution depending on how events develop.

The bigger question, though, is how Tech3 would handle the possibility of a mid-season rider change—particularly if Viñales’ time at the team is effectively over. One scenario being discussed is the early promotion of Senna Agius. Reports suggest that Guenther Steiner has already selected Agius for a 2027 seat alongside Luca Marini, who is contracted to Honda at the end of the year. Agius is currently pledged to IntactGP, but the reporting notes that a compensation arrangement could potentially be explored to allow an earlier move.

A key factor would be whether Agius is willing to switch plans. At 21, he still has a realistic shot at winning the Moto2 title, with the gap to teammate Manuel González reported as 59.5 points. The argument for an early jump is that it would give him half a season of preparation for his full rookie MotoGP campaign, including acclimatisation to the team and the premier-class paddock and an opportunity to assess new rivals. The reporting also highlights that Agius would benefit from arriving without the pressure that often comes with established expectations, and that he has had limited testing compared with many of his peers.

For Tech3, the practical challenge would be finding a replacement if Agius moved up early, but the reporting suggests there is a “conveyor belt” of young talent available. It also notes that such a mid-season reshuffle would be unusual, pointing to KTM’s own history of making changes during the year—such as dropping Johann Zarco mid-season in 2019 and bringing forward Iker Lecuona’s debut to the Valencia season finale after Miguel Oliveira was injured.
