ACOSTA JOINED DUCATI TO CHALLENGE MARQUEZ ON EQUAL MACHINERY

KTM says Pedro Acosta’s move to Ducati’s factory MotoGP team for 2027 is driven by a sporting challenge, not a more lucrative contract. Acosta wants to beat Marc Marquez on equal machinery, KTM reports. He will replace Francesco Bagnaia and join reigning champion Marquez, creating a high-profile pairing at Ducati.

Acosta, 22, has described Marquez as being at “the final stage of his career” while he is “just starting.” Marquez, who will turn 34 before next season and has won 78 MotoGP races, has endured multiple arm surgeries. How long he will continue racing remains uncertain: his contract runs through 2028, but he has said he will ride as long as he feels competitive. Acosta, meanwhile, claimed his first MotoGP victory in Austria last weekend.

The prospect of Acosta facing Marquez on the same bike is compelling, but the new rivalry may not be his biggest long-term challenge. Acosta’s KTM crew chief says the Spaniard is “nowhere near” his full potential, while 18-year-old compatriot Maximo Quiles is emerging as another major talent. Quiles has won nine of the 14 Moto3 races he has entered this season and finished outside the podium only once. He could clinch the title at Motegi with six rounds remaining, and Aspar has confirmed his promotion to Moto2.

Quiles’ progress in the intermediate class will show whether his rapid rise continues, but he could reach MotoGP as soon as 2028. Acosta and Marquez are separated by 11 years; Acosta and Quiles by only four. Though the younger rider is still two classes away, the pair could become defining rivals of the 2030s.
