JORGE MARTIN EXTENDS 2026 MOTOGP LEAD AFTER AUSTRIA AS MARQUEZ MISSES PODIUM

After the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, round 15 of 22, the 2026 MotoGP World Championship picture has shifted again at the top. Jorge Martin, who entered Austria tied on points with Marc Marquez, left the weekend with a clearer advantage thanks to a strong result that extended his lead over the Ducati rider.

Martin’s factory Aprilia 1-2 outcome in Austria proved decisive. He now leads the standings on 306 points, 12 clear of Marquez on 294. The reigning Ducati champion, who missed out on the podium in Austria, saw his position at the front tightened rather than extended.

Behind them, the battle for third also moved. Marco Bezzecchi—Martin’s Aprilia teammate—lost ground in the wake of the Austrian race and is now more than a full race weekend behind the leader. Bezzecchi sits third with 264 points, 42 points adrift of Martin.

The biggest headline from Austria came from Pedro Acosta, whose maiden MotoGP victory lifted him up the order. Acosta’s win has taken him to fourth in the championship on 234 points, moving him into the top group as he closes in on the leading trio.

The rest of the top ten shows a mix of stability and small shifts. Fabio di Giannantonio is fifth with 230 points, followed by Ai Ogura in sixth on 222. Raul Fernandez remains seventh on 203, while Alex Marquez is eighth with 158. Francesco Bagnaia completes the top ten’s first half in ninth on 156, and Fermin Aldeguer is tenth with 115.

Beyond the leading positions, the standings continue to reflect the season’s spread. Luca Marini is 11th on 98, Enea Bastianini 12th on 97, and Brad Binder 13th with 94. Diogo Moreira is 14th on 65, with Fabio Quartararo 15th on 61. Franco Morbidelli follows in 16th on 56, Johann Zarco is 17th on 45, and Joan Mir is 18th with 33.

With the championship now at the halfway point of the second half of the calendar, Martin’s 12-point buffer over Marquez sets up an important stretch: the leader has momentum from Austria, while Marquez will need to respond quickly after a podium-less outing. Acosta’s breakthrough victory also adds another factor to the title fight, as he climbs into contention just four rounds after the season’s midpoint of 22 races.
