LORIS CAPIROSSI HONOURED AS A MOTO GP LEGEND AHEAD OF THE SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX

At Misano’s San Marino Grand Prix weekend, Loris Capirossi was honoured in front of a home crowd as one of MotoGP’s all-time greats. The Italian, who lives near Imola about an hour from the Misano circuit with his family, became the focus of Saturday’s proceedings when MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta officially named him a MotoGP Legend, recognising his achievements across a 20-year career.

Capirossi’s record was highlighted as part of the tribute: 29 Grand Prix wins and 99 podium finishes. Ezpeleta, visibly moved during the presentation of the honorary medal, said it was “an exceptionally personal matter” and a “big moment” to honour Loris. He added that he was fortunate to watch Capirossi’s entire career live, from his first World Championship race in Jarama to his current role helping improve MotoGP safety standards. Ezpeleta described Capirossi as more than a great rider, calling him part of the MotoGP family and praising his character.

Speaking after receiving the award, Capirossi said the moment was overwhelming and emotional. Recalling that he had never imagined such recognition, he thanked everyone present, emphasising that the people who make up MotoGP are the ones he has valued and appreciated for many years. He also looked back on his early success, noting that he was still the youngest motorcycle world champion at 17, after winning his first title in the 125cc class.

Capirossi then broadened the gratitude beyond himself, stressing that he was supported throughout his career. He thanked the manufacturers as well: Honda for trusting him and enabling his first titles; Aprilia for providing him with a “fantastic” 250cc machine; and Yamaha for his 500cc success. He also credited Ducati for giving him the opportunity to win in MotoGP and fight for the championship with the Desmosedici, while mentioning Suzuki for allowing him to celebrate his last MotoGP podium.

With eyes still wet, Capirossi dedicated the honour to his family. He said his father, mother, brother, wife and son are the most important people in his life, and that only with a strong family is a career like his possible.

Finally, he addressed Ezpeleta directly, explaining that the emotions he felt today mirrored those from his racing days. He said that in all the years as a rider, the butterflies in his stomach would start about two hours before the start, and that this morning he felt the same sensation again.
