MOREIRA’S FIRST 2027 HONDA TEST LEAVES HIM BUOYANT

8 Oct 2026·

Honda is putting substantial effort into its 2027 MotoGP project, hoping the next regulation reset can help it return to the front. The changes include smaller 850cc engines, Pirelli tyres, less aerodynamic downforce and reduced electronics. Honda is on course to end the current 1000cc era without a podium for the first time since 2024, but its limited prospects this season allow it to direct significant resources towards the new machine.

Early signs have encouraged the team. LCR Honda rookie Diogo Moreira reportedly set the fastest time at a private 850cc test in Austria after the Grand Prix, with reports putting him around half a second clear. There was no official timing classification, and the results are too preliminary to establish how Honda compares with its rivals. Still, test rider Aleix Espargaro said Moreira’s pace and simulation suggested the rider and bike were working well.

Espargaro also revealed that Moreira contacted him after the test. “He was like it was Christmas Day: super happy and grateful,” he told DAZN, adding that it was encouraging to see the rider’s reaction and Honda’s project progressing.

The development programme is demanding. Espargaro said work on the 850cc bike is taking considerable time and effort, and that he would begin a three-day test after finishing his current race-weekend duties. “It doesn’t stop here,” he said. “I’m excited to be able to help.” He is also set to deputise for Joan Mir this weekend.

Honda has been linked with making meaningful progress ahead of 2027, although the Italian manufacturers are still widely considered to have an advantage. Fabio Quartararo, Honda’s marquee signing, has played down expectations of immediate success, while the team believes he can be “a threat” next season. His first chance to ride the new bike is expected at the post-season test in Valencia, a key next step in Honda’s preparations.
