NEIL HODGSON BAFFLED BY MARC MARQUEZ POSTING “HORRENDOUS” ARM INJURY DURING TITLE FIGHT

Marc Marquez’s 2026 title push has been drawing attention not only for results, but also for how he has chosen to communicate his physical problems. The Ducati rider posted on social media showing the condition of his right arm, described as a “horrendous” scrape, after a season marked by multiple injury setbacks. According to reporting, Marquez has been dealing with nerve damage stemming from his crash at Mandalika last year, and he had previously kept a shoulder issue “secret” from his team. After breaking his foot at Le Mans, he underwent shoulder surgery and returned to the grid at Mugello, where he has since reignited his championship challenge.

The timing of the post has raised eyebrows. With nine rounds remaining, Marquez is in the fight for the crown and has won four of the last seven races, leaving him 19 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin. Neil Hodgson, speaking on the Gas It Out podcast, said he couldn’t understand why Marquez would share such a graphic injury while still battling for the world title. “When I looked at it, the first thing I thought was not the wastage. I thought, ‘Why has he put that up?’ Seems a really strange thing to do,” Hodgson said. He added that while the injury is clearly serious, the context of a “real battle” for the championship makes the decision puzzling: “With nine rounds to go, I’m struggling to work out why he’s put that up. That was my first thought. Not, ‘Wow, look how bad it is’, of course, it’s horrendous. It’s probably worse than we all thought.”

Hodgson also questioned what the post was meant to achieve, suggesting it could be either confidence that the issue is manageable or, alternatively, an admission of limitations. “I then thought, ‘Is it because he’s now so confident that he knows it’s not a problem, he wants to show it off, or is it the opposite?’” he said. He pointed to the possibility that Marquez’s upcoming schedule could force him to accept lower finishes if the injury continues to affect him, referencing results such as fifths and sevenths at Silverstone.

The broader concern is risk management. Claudio Domenicali has been urging Marquez to push less in practice to reduce the chance of another accident that could threaten his championship bid. With Marquez facing scrutiny over his injury history throughout his career, the focus now is on minimizing further setbacks as the season enters its final stretch.
