Pedro Acosta’s long wait for a MotoGP win ended at the Red Bull Ring, delivering an emotional first victory on KTM’s home turf and reigniting debate about where he sits in the 2026 title picture. The Spaniard had been quick from the start and, despite looking set for an easier breakthrough, had to earn the result the hard way on Sunday.

Acosta’s weekend had early signs of promise but also setbacks. In the sprint, he threw away what had looked like a certain win when he crashed with three laps remaining. Then, on Sunday morning, he left the KTM garage with more repair work after falling during warm-up. Despite those issues, once the main race got underway he made his move: after taking the lead on lap nine of 28, he controlled the remainder of the distance and “never looked back,” holding off Aprilia’s Jorge Martin.

The win also marks a significant milestone in the Acosta–KTM relationship. At 22, he is set to move to Ducati next season, and the victory at Spielberg is described as closing a circle for the partnership. Even with the championship gap still large—Acosta is reported to be 72 points behind the leaders—Marc Marquez believes the former KTM rider is still capable of challenging for the title.
