SUPERCARS TO RETURN TO PHILLIP ISLAND FROM 2027

17 Oct 2026·

Phillip Island has secured a major racing event from 2027, when the Supercars Championship returns to the circuit under a five-year agreement. The deal gives the venue a new fixture after MotoGP’s Australian Grand Prix moves away following the 2026 season, a decision that drew widespread criticism from fans. The circuit will lose both MotoGP and WorldSBK, but will remain in use as a major Supercars calendar fixture.

Supercars, Australia’s leading touring-car series, last raced at Phillip Island in 2019. Its comeback will be part of the championship’s end-of-season Finals, with the circuit hosting one of the events in the title contest. The return also coincides with Supercars’ 30th anniversary in 2027; the series first visited Phillip Island in 1997.

“It feels incredibly fitting to return to Phillip Island,” said Supercars executive chairman Barclay Nettlefold, noting the circuit’s place in the championship’s history. He called it an iconic venue that had produced memorable moments and said the series was excited to create a new chapter for fans, teams and drivers.

The announcement offers a boost to local businesses after MotoGP’s departure raised concerns about the region’s event-driven economy. Although attendance at Phillip Island had fallen in recent years and the venue can be difficult to reach, MotoGP and World Superbike events have brought important crowds and customers to the area. WorldSBK is also expected to leave after its 2027 season-opener.

Victoria’s Minister for Major Events, Anthony Carbines, said the Supercars return would bring crowds and customers back to local businesses. He said the state had secured the event for five years because regional Victoria deserved major events with lasting benefits.

MotoGP has agreed with the South Australian Government to stage its Australian Grand Prix on a new Adelaide street circuit from 2027. The plan still faces significant political hurdles. Phillip Island will host the MotoGP race for the final time next weekend, as the championship prepares to say goodbye to one of its most iconic and fan-favourite venues.
