ESPARAGARO EXPECTS VINALES TO RETURN FOR MOTEGI

Pol Espargaro expects Maverick Vinales to be ready to return to Tech3 KTM for MotoGP’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, although the team has not yet confirmed whether the Spaniard will race.

Vinales has missed the past four rounds while receiving further treatment for a persistent left shoulder injury. He last competed at the German Grand Prix in July, but returned to the track at Monday’s Pirelli test at the Red Bull Ring. He reportedly set competitive times and was the quickest rider using adapted 1000cc machinery.

Espargaro, KTM’s test rider, has filled in during Vinales’ absence. After finishing 16th in Austria, he said he did not expect to take part in the overseas races, adding that Vinales appeared to be nearing a comeback. “Japan would be perfect for him,” Espargaro said, describing Motegi as a suitable place for Vinales to return and build back towards his usual pace.

The factory’s need to have a rider ready to race is also a factor, Espargaro noted. He said that if Vinales does not take the seat, it would be because the Grand Prix is important to KTM and the team wants someone prepared to compete.

Espargaro is due to resume work on KTM’s 850cc motorcycle for the 2027 regulations. He called the current period crucial for development, with tests scheduled while MotoGP is racing overseas. Travelling to Japan and missing one of those sessions would be “super painful” for the project, he said.

Vinales has no seat on the 2027 grid. His participation at Motegi remains unconfirmed, but his return to testing has strengthened expectations that he could rejoin the Tech3 line-up for the start of the flyaway rounds.
