NEIL HODGSON SAYS MARC MARQUEZ’S FRUSTRATION ‘MASK SLIPPED’ IN AUSTRIA

Marc Marquez’s Austrian Grand Prix left Neil Hodgson convinced “the mask slipped” as Ducati failed to deliver the level of performance many expected at the Red Bull Ring. Marquez had looked in contention in the Sprint, finishing second behind Jorge Martin, but his Sunday race ended with fifth place after he had been seventh at one stage. The result cost him ground in the title fight, with Martin extending the gap by 12 points.

TNT Sports pundit Gavin Emmett described a noticeably different Marquez mood across the weekend. “Not working for Marquez at all this weekend,” Emmett said during the race. “He was grumpy yesterday. He hardly sprayed the champagne on the podium, he didn’t talk to the other riders almost in the car, when they had their debrief. I think it’s because he knew this was a distinct possibility.”

Hodgson agreed, adding that Marquez is usually better at concealing frustration. “He could see into the future and he knew, in theory, that he didn’t really have a chance to battle for the win,” Hodgson said. “It’s as grumpy as I’ve seen him. I did smile, actually, looking at him sat in the back seat like a spoiled child a little bit! It was quite funny, wasn’t it? He doesn’t normally let the mask slip, does he, but we spotted it there.”

While Michelin brought a special heat-treated rear tyre to Spielberg—an option that has historically mattered for Ducati—neither Marquez nor Francesco Bagnaia, who finished seventh, appeared to view it as the deciding factor. One Ducati engineer suggested Aprilia’s package was simply superior, though that claim sat awkwardly against Ducati’s recent Misano form, where it had delivered a one-two.

Elsewhere in the Ducati camp, Alex Marquez crashed out on Sunday. Fermin Aldeguer finished eighth, Fabio Di Giannantonio was ninth, and Franco Morbidelli came home outside the points. The weekend also highlighted Aprilia’s strength, with a two-three-four finish and Pedro Acosta’s standout performance helping shape expectations for the Austrian round.
