SENNA AGIUS COMPLETES FIRST MOTOGP TEST WITH KTM TECH3 AND EXPLAINS WHY 2027 WAS THE RIGHT TIME

6h ago·

Senna Agius marked a major milestone in his path to MotoGP by taking part in his first official test on a premier-class machine during the Red Bull Ring’s 850cc session on Monday. The 21-year-old is set to debut with KTM Tech3 in 2027, and the Austria test offered him his first real taste of the bike and tyres that will define the new era coming with the sport’s 850cc regulations.

Agius’ move to Tech3 has been widely framed as a two-year deal for the satellite team, with the squad also reshaping its line-up for the start of the 850cc rules. Luca Marini, currently racing for Honda, is also joining Tech3 for 2027. Together, Agius and Marini are expected to usher in a new chapter for the team after KTM chose not to extend works contracts for Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini to continue riding for the satellite outfit.

The test also underlines how Tech3 and the wider grid are looking to the next wave of riders graduating from Moto2. Agius is part of a group rising through with recent experience of Pirelli tyres, and the 2027 rule changes are seen as an opportunity for fresh faces to make an impact. With the new regulations arriving alongside broader aerodynamic restrictions and a tyre switch to Pirelli, the sport’s transition is expected to create openings for rookies who can quickly adapt.

According to SPEEDWEEK, Agius enjoyed a “fabulous” debut MotoGP test with Tech3. The report highlights that he was able to work on both the Pirelli 2027 MotoGP tyres and, crucially, KTM’s 850cc machine. It is also said that Tech3 allowed Agius to help with testing after his Moto2 team, Intact GP, gave approval for him to take part one day after the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. He completed running across both the morning and afternoon sessions and, as reported, had a clean day with no known issues.

There is, however, some uncertainty over the exact specification of the bike Agius rode. SPEEDWEEK’s account suggests he tested KTM’s 850cc bike. Sky Sports Italy, though, believes Agius—along with Pramac Yamaha rookie Izan Guevara—used detuned versions of KTM and Yamaha’s 1,000cc machinery. The difference matters because both riders are still rookies in 2027, and Sky Sports Italy’s view is that the bikes used for the 850cc test may not have been the final form they will ride when the regulations fully take effect.

The contrast with KTM test rider Pol Espargaro was also noted. While Agius’ day was described as trouble-free, Espargaro reportedly crashed early at Turn 2 as he pushed to get up to speed with the 850cc package.

Beyond the immediate test, the bigger picture for 2027 is clear: the most significant changes are the reduction in engine capacity from 1,000cc to 850cc and the switch from Michelin to Pirelli. MotoGP’s overall look is expected to remain similar, with aerodynamic restrictions mainly affecting the size of the front and rear wings. With that in mind, the value of Agius’ tyre familiarity from Moto2 is likely to be central to KTM’s development work.

The reports also point out that KTM has already trialled its 850cc engine and more basic aero approach extensively through private testing with Espargaro. That context makes Agius’ role in gathering feedback—particularly on Pirelli—more logical, especially if his first full MotoGP experience is still to come at the Valencia test in November.

Agius also explained that the timing of the 2027 shift was a key factor in his negotiations with Tech3. Speaking to MotoGP.com, he said his crew went into talks with the “motive” of “now is the time,” describing it as an opportunity to “jump on the train” while the changes were being experienced for the first time. He added: “Not everybody is starting again,” and argued that with “a new bike, new tyres,” rookies could take advantage of the moment rather than waiting “a year or two later.” He said that if he had the chance for 2027, he would take it “1,000 per cent,” because “we all believed it’s the time.”

Crash.net also noted that Agius’ 2027 Tech3 contract was announced at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend, and that he will be one of four rookies on the 2027 grid alongside Nicolo Bulega, Dani Holgado and David Alonso. The same report highlighted that, alongside the 850cc engine limit and Pirelli becoming the sole tyre supplier, ride height devices are banned for 2027—further shaping the conditions in which the new arrivals will begin their premier-class careers.
