Ahead of the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli (11–13 September), several MotoGP riders will swap their bikes for a basketball court. Marco Bezzecchi, Pecco Bagnaia and Franco Morbidelli—Italian home favourites and VR46 Academy riders—are set to take part in a 3x3 basketball show contest in Rimini.
The event is organised by FIBA together with MotoGP on 9 September at Piazzale Kennedy, starting at 17:30. The “FIBA 3x3 MotoGP Showcase” is designed to bring together MotoGP pilots, basketball players and fans for an evening of entertainment. The programme includes a dunking show, followed by a basketball match featuring MotoGP riders, FIBA 3x3 players and special guests.
The format is three-versus-three, with teams of three players competing on a single basket. Morbidelli will lead his side against a team that includes Bezzecchi and Bagnaia. Other confirmed participants include 3x3 basketball player Giorgio Di Bonaventura and content creator Luca Campolunghi, with additional names expected to be announced shortly before the competition.
FIBA 3x3 CEO Alex Sanchez highlighted the crossover appeal of the concept, saying the combination of MotoGP riders and 3x3 basketball players, along with content creators, offers “a unique opportunity to unite two dynamic sports communities” and introduce new fans to 3x3 basketball in an exciting setting. MotoGP’s global marketing director Kelly Brittain added that the collaboration with FIBA will “bring together basketball and MotoGP,” promising “great entertainment” for supporters to enjoy just before the San Marino race weekend begins.
